Transfer Through iCloud.com/photos:
On your Samsung phone, open a browser, and go to iCloud.com/photos. Then, upload the photos there. Next, access them in the Photos app on your Mac. You'd do the following on your Mac:

I can't help with Samsung phones, but generally speaking if you connect a USB device that macOS recognizes as a camera, it will automatically offer to import its photos.
Basically, connect it to your Mac with a cable.
My iMac won't recognize an android phone using only a cable. If you need to get files from the phone, you can use "Android File Transfer" https://www.android.com/filetransfer/ You can't preview the files, but you can copy them to your computer. I hope this helps.
