Backup Disk Issues

I want to restore my mac using a backup I created.

The external drive its on is formatted as MAC OS Extended (Journaled)

I restart my mac and hold command + r and select recover from time machine back up.

When I select the disk I want to use to recover my mac it asks me to unlock it but it is not an encrypted disk. I do not need to enter a password when I open it on my desktop.

A. Is there a way to resolve or get around this issue.

B. If there is a password set on it and I did enter text in the hint field when I formatted it where could that text now be found?

If you're talking about Time Machine, all it will restore is user data, user settings and such.

"restore my Mac", the actual OS on the disk, is more involved than using TM to restore user data. In this case, TM is used to restore data after your OS has been reinstalled.

I was running Catalina before but wanted to play a game that was no longer compatible so I made a backup and reverted my mac to Mojave. I am now done with that game so I updated back to Catalina and now I wish to use the backup I made to revert my mac and its files back to what it was when I was running Catalina before before. So I have the correct OS installed.
