iPhone SE 2022 battery troubleshooting & observations
On my new iPhone SE 2022, battery usage seemed reasonable early on (iOS 15.4 preinstalled), then cratered maybe 3-4 days after upgrading to 15.4.1, so well after the 48 hr recommendation for stabilization.
I'm a very light user, with my only installed apps being Xfinity Hotspots (since uninstalled), Image Size and ReSIZER (because it's ludicrous, IMO, to be saving 7+ MB photos with no built-in option to resize and compress, when the 200 KB equivalent looks identical on a small screen), NIOSH db meter, Gboard (so much better than Apple's keyboard), and FB Messenger. Brightness turned down to maybe 10%, no vibrate, dark mode, no wall paper, no games, background refresh turned off for most stuff, raise to wake (meaning the home screen is rarely activated; lock screen only for checking for messages), minimal notifications allowed, etc.
The below tests were done at home with strong WiFi and solid wireless signals. Here's what I've determined thus far. TLDR: I have most of the usage accounted for, but there are several iOS controls that don't seem to be running properly.
Day 1, 4/08:
In the evening, I tried turning on Low Power Mode, per many recommendations. To my surprise, the battery started dropping like a rock. It went from 79% to 72% in 90 minutes of no use, and was down to 67% an hour later (still no use), so a pretty consistent 5% per hour. LPM shouldn't be doing anything until sub-20%, but I found a few people reporting similar problems, with the theory being that LPM reduces the processor's performance.

I had turned off WiFi calling somewhere around the time of experimenting with LPM, but I hadn't made or taken any calls after that, so it shouldn't have had any effect on battery usage that day.
At 9pm, I turned off LPM with the battery at 66%. It was down to 63% at 11pm, so 3% in 2 hrs = 1.5%/hr instead of the 5%/hr with LPM on.
Day 2, 4/09:
Overnight usage was alarming, dropping from 61% to 44% in 9 hrs (1.9%/hr), so not out of line with last night's rate after turning off LPM. It's just surprising to see that much usage when the time span is increased. It would use almost exactly half the battery daily with never having the screen turned on.
I checked the Battery data page and saw, for the past 24: Screen On 1 hr 14 min, Screen Off 1 hr 44 min. Definitely a hint there that something is running in the background. Xfinity Hotspots accounted for 67% of battery usage despite never being open, and being set to run only when in use. Mail also showed extensive background activity (3 hr 5 min, only 1 mim open), but no battery usage. I have two POP accounts set up, but only as Manual Fetch. Mail should never be running in the background. I don't have an iCloud email account, and I don't see any way to keep Mail from looking for that, but maybe there's something going on there?

Those sound similar, in terms of Mail running when it shouldn't. But, since the phone is reporting no battery usage for Mail, I'm wondering if maybe the background activity reporting is erroneous?
I charged the battery to 80% at 9am, disabled background refresh for FB Messenger & Hotspots, turned off a few Siri learning settings for various apps, and at 10am it was still at 80%. It was down to 78% by 11am (1%/hr, half of overnight usage), 77% by noon, 72% @ 3:30pm (5% in 3.5 hrs), 71% @ 5pm (6% in 5 hrs), 66% @ 11pm with light use (5% in 6 hrs) = 14% in 14 hrs. Looking like progress...
