hey, so I'm trying to change my Apple ID email address. when I put in the new email address, a message pops up: Email used by Another Apple ID. The email address is not available. Choose a different address."
I have no memory of that new email being linked to another Apple ID. is there a way to check/fix this problem?

Looks like that the Apple ID's are not yours.
Have you bought 2nd hand iDevice?
Each Apple device is linked/associated with an Apple ID of the person who did the setup.
Activation Lock prevents anyone who is not the owner from using this iPhone.
To unlock the Phone, you need the Apple ID and password of the previous owner, that were used during set up.
So contact the previous owner.

Sign in to your Apple ID account page and check / edit your Apple ID details.
