Connecting Studio Display to old MacBook

Is there any reason why I can't connect a new Apple Studio Display to a mid-2015 MacBook Pro by connecting the Thunderbolt 3 lead to a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 converter and then a double ended Thunderbolt 2 lead to connect to the Macbook's Thunderbolt 2 port? The staff at the local Apple store were dubious but didn't know definitely that it wouldn't work.
