Rapid Flickering on External Display via Thunderbolt 4

Since purchase, whenever I plug in my external display onto my MacBook Pro it will flicker under 144hz or 120hz refresh rates. This problem does not appear when selecting 100hz or lower.

I've looked up technical specifications on apple's website and it says the thunderbolt 4 ports support up to three 6k60hz monitors and one 4k60hz monitor

since I am trying to connect my external display via thunderbolt instead of hdmi, it should be able to support at least 4k@120hz.

I have tried the following:

  1. Changing a cable
  2. resetting VRAM
  3. rebooting into safe mode
  4. creating a new user

My monitor works fine since 4k144 works fine with my Windows laptop

Monitor compatibility is also not an issue according to the retailer I bought my monitor from

My External Display Specs

3840x2160 up to 144hz

Hello 宇-,

You've completed some excellent steps thus far. We recommend continuing with the information found here: If your external display isn't detected or appears blurry when connected to your Mac

Additionally, " If you're using a USB-C or Thunderbolt adapter to connect your display, the adapter must be compliant with DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt / USB 4." You can find this information and more here: Connect a display to your Mac and here: Use an external display with your MacBook Pro

If this is the same MacBook Pro that recently came into contact with liquid, you can also test checking the port for any possible erosion or testing with a different cable.

Should you need further assistance, reach out to Apple Support directly.
