I can't sign in to Messenger on my Macbook, but it works fine on ios

Lately I have found that Apple routinely won't accept my password, primarily on my older MacBook Pro (Sierra 10.12.6). It then forces me to reset my password which opens up a whole series of events... Logging in to multiple apps on different devices. Not withstanding the annoyance, the new password is accepted everywhere by on my MacBook.

I've been in a cycle of resetting passwords and resetting memory etc, but nothing is working. Since I use the Mac calendar etc, it's a royal pain because nothing will sync to my MacBook.

Help! Please!

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.12

Could be several things...

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes.

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...

Open System Preferences>Users & Groups, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.

Does it work in the new account?

Go on the Apple certificate page:

https://www.apple.com/certificateauthority/

Download the Apple Intermediate Certificates

Apple IST CA 2 - G1 Certificate (direct download)

Double click the downloaded certificate to install it in Keychain Access.

You should see it now, in login certificates.

Thanks BDA

I'd tried SafeBoot a few times with no result. I just tried setting up a second Admin account, to no effect. It's interesting that in my multiple reboots I have to keep relogging in to Apple ID which has happened in the past, and then suddenly it ends. Currently, when I log directly in to iCloud.com, sometimes in works but half the time I'll get a server error or something similar. It never says my password is wrong, so I'm wondering if it may be something systemic, although I doubt it. I've had this happen before, but not ever for this long.

This other stuff you mentioned is largely Greek to me, but I'll see if I can follow it along.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to me. I really appreciate it.
