After upgradeto Monterey ethernet adaptor doesn't work

I recently upgraded from Big Sur to Monterey on my work Macbook Pro (Specs below) and since then my ethernet refuses to work. The adaptor is shown in the Network preferences list but simply no internet is possible. Wifi works fine, problem is I need the ethernet as this puts me on the office network which is necessary for certain tools we use.


I have tried physically removing the adaptor, rebooting and then plugging it back in as well as removing the adaptor within the network preferences, renewing DHCP etc all without success. Ethernet adaptor in the network preferences will show a green indicator but simply nothing.


Used two different docks, different ethernet cables, floor port and also same issue at home (Geographically different workplace and network)


I am now desperate and considering possibly rolling back to Big Sur, which in itself is a pain but hoping someone here has a solution? Is this a known/common issue?

MacosX Monterey - 12.3.1

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports)

Processor: 2.3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7

Memory: 16 GB 3733 MHz LPDDR4X

Graphics: Intel Iris Plus Graphics 1536 MB

Hi zanzibarwindss,


It sounds like you've tried some really good troubleshooting on your own. To clarify, can you let us know exactly which Ethernet adapter you're using, so that we can do a bit more research here on our end? If you're using a third-party Ethernet adapter, it's possible that a firmware update may be required. The adapter we would normally recommend is Belkin USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter


We're leaning toward the issue being with the adapter or dock, since the problem persists with multiple cables and networks.


Let us know what you find, and we'll work from there.

Troubleshooting Ethernet Adapters and Upgrades:

A. Start with a Restart: Having just updated, perform a restart.


B. Single-Out this User:

Try creating a secondary administrator account. See if it then works. If so, then it is an issue with your current user. If not, then it is likely an error with the install, in which case, you'd backup your Mac, and then reinstall the macOS.

I have found a simple solution that simply works!


M1 Max Mac Book Pro, 64GB RAM, 1TB SSD, 16", Monterey 12.3.1

- j5create USB Adapter (Genesys Logic Inc) - simply would not connect on Ethernet

- iWALK USB Adapter (VIA Labs Inc) - simply would not connect on Ethernet



Interestingly, I am able to connect a Microsoft Wired USB Mouse via both the above adapters and work very well

- My M1 Mac refuses to connect to the Ethernet thru them though




On a hunch, I went to the Apple Store @ Orchard Road @ Singapore and got some very timely advice from Mr Timothy C. (God bless the young man) / he tried the following


- connected the original Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter to the Mac to which he connected the original Apple USB Ethernet Adapter and Voila, my M1 Mac connected to the Ethernet instantly



- to make things simpler, he went looking for the original Apple Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter but it was out of stock

- he connected a "Belkin" USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter and Voila again, my M1 Mac connected to the Ethernet instantly




I bought the Belkin Adapter for SGD 44 (USD 32), brought it home and have been enjoying the amazing experience (what a relief) 


My 5 Cents Worth

- Very similar to the issues we face with charger wires for the iPhone, Apple is very sensitive to the accessories it will allow it's hardware to work with

- Best to stick to Original Apple Adapters / Belkins of this world which are sold by Apple

- If this had struck me before, I would saved myself hours and hours trying to connect Ethernet to my M1 Mac and also a trip to the Apple Store / lesson learnt

These devices require a Driver, but it is usually a standard driver, and can be added to the interface list in


System preferences > network


If you have not done so already, I suggest you delete the existing interface and add it back again, and see if the situation improves.


Be sure you have not added any VPN functions in that network list, as they can interfere with other devices. I added something to look at later, and it knocked my ethernet adapter offline.

I have tried two different docks, both don't work.


The first is a DesertWest USB-C dock (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07FMY117Q/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and the other I tried was a Saferell (USB C Hub Docking Station - 4k DUAL-Display 9 in 2 Thunderbolt 3 Multiport Laptop Docking Station, 2 HDMI, PD Charging, USB3.0 Type C, 2 USB 3.0 ports)
