Apple TV app on Samsung Q9FN (Tizen 4) doesn't put out HDR anymore.

Anyone else has this? All my other apps work, also dolby vision still activates on my LG.

Yes I've been having this issue since the app was last updated on 7th April and I've come across three others on twitter.

Seems as of the update any purchased titles that are dolby vision aren't pulling through HDR10 as they should on many Samsung TVs (which don't support Dolby Vision). Also seems to playing them in less than 4k and likely less than 1080p. Titles that are HDR10 only play fine in HDR and 4k.

I think it may also be impacting titles purchased after the update differently. I bought Belfast and it will only play for about 5 seconds before stopping and giving a 'video not available' error. I've tried refunding and repurchasing and still the same. It's a Doby Vision title and plays fine on my smaller OLED tv. I purchased Sing 2 which is an HDR10 only title and that plays, albeit not in HDR 4k.

I've had a couple of calls with support and they have escalated to an engineer, but very frustrating as I have spent over £1000 on 4k titles so not being able to watch what I paid for on our living room TV isn't on!

I also have this exact tv. My Apple TV app got Auto Updated on April 6th and have had problems with it since. Not only do my iTunes 4K purchases not play in 4K/HDR, but I'm also encountering a bug where episodes that I'm watching will restart at the beginning when I come back to them hours later. I also have an Apple TV 4K which works as it should with 4K/HDR purchases. This shows that Apple hasn't just dropped support for non Dolby Vision 4K which I've read is the excuse in some of the complaints online. Prior to this Apple TV app update, everything worked great.

I’ve got a call scheduled with them today l will log the issue with them then. Also after doing some more testing and checking if content is “dolby vision” or just “HDR” on other devices, I can confirm that like others, it is only purchased content with Dolby Vision available that is affected, content the is just HDR is unaffected. Also, Apple TV+ shows marked as Dolby vision still working fine.

Hi Epak0,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. We have some steps to take when you notice a difference in quality:

•Make sure that your television supports HDR10 or Dolby Vision

In order for Apple TV 4K to automatically set your display format to HDR10 or Dolby Vision, your television must be able to display HDR10 or Dolby Vision at 60Hz (50Hz in Europe). Apple TV 4K can display these formats at 30Hz (25Hz in Europe), but you’ll need to enable Match Dynamic Range in Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content. If you aren’t sure which formats your television supports, check the user manual for your television.

•Use the correct HDMI input and settings

Depending on your television, you may need to use a different HDMI input on your television for high quality 4K or HDR video. For example, some televisions only support HDR on HDMI input 2 or HDMI input 3. Check your television’s user guide to identify which inputs support 4K and HDR.

In addition to using the correct HDMI input, you may need to enable HDR10 or Dolby Vision in the video or HDMI settings on your television. In some cases, the setting may not refer directly to HDR10 or Dolby Vision, examples include Ultra, Deep, or Enhanced video or color.

•Check your HDMI cable

4K video, especially HDR10 and Dolby Vision, requires an HDMI cable compatible with these formats. Apple recommends HDMI cables that have the Compatible Dolby Vision mark as they have been tested with Apple TV 4K and a wide range of televisions. An example is the Belkin Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable.

If there's an issue with your HDMI cable, you might see a message on your Apple TV that says that your HDMI cable might be having trouble maintaining a stable connection. To check your HDMI cable connection, go to Settings > Video and Audio and select Check HDMI Connection to run a 2 minute test.

If you still experience issues with your HDMI cable connection, check all of your connections and make sure that your HDMI cable has the label “Compatible Dolby Vision.”

•Check other components

If you're using other components, like an audio video receiver, HDMI switch, or sound bar, temporarily connect your Apple TV 4K directly to your television. If the issue doesn’t occur when directly connected to your television, check the following:

Receiver or sound bar

If you're using an audio video receiver or sound bar, you should check its capabilities, connections, settings, as well as the following:

  • Verify that your receiver is capable of displaying 4K and higher video, and that you're using HDMI inputs that support 4K and HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2 signals.
  • Receivers that support HDR10 or Dolby Vision often require a firmware update to add this support.
  • Check the video and HDMI settings on your receiver after updating, as you may need to enable enhanced HDMI in settings.
  • Make sure that all the HDMI cables connecting your Apple TV 4K to your television and receiver are compatible with 4K and HDR video.

See more on that here: About 4K, HDR, and Dolby Vision on your Apple TV 4K

Thanks

Well I hope they solve this at some point. Noticed it a couple of nights ago when renting a movie. No HDR although all the tags were there, played fine on our bedroom Oled though(in Dolby Vision ofc).

I noticed at work (all Samsung sets there) that Alien plays in HDR and it was the same at home, it must not support Dolby Vision.

Hello,

got the same problem. I get no HDR on titles where also DV is available. Also no HDR logo shows up in itunes and the app, only see DV logo. Even for old titles which previously had both HDR and DV HDR logo got removed.

Has apple removed support for HDR? I didn't see any official statement yet. What happened? Hope this will be fixed soon specially for samsung users and other player with no DV support.
