Not enough space restoring from time machine

I am using MacBook Pro 15' 2018

With storage 256GB.

Backup on time machine HDD 750GB.

As you can see, it just use 178GB

But when I am try restore it, it say Library folder have more than 800GB.

So I cannot restore it?

I install Mac OS to external 1TB SSD, and restore from time machine, still say it has 800GB on Library folder, and after finish, itu just use 202GB.

Then I boot to internal. Using migration, from external SSD, still say it has 800GB on Library folder

How do I restore to 256GB internal storage if it say have 800GB?

I found the problem

Is Microsoft OneDrive

I have more than 600GB onedrive.

Latest version onedrive put the folder inside Library. Time machine read real size of file note size the link file.

This is a problem. Cannot excluded anything inside library folder.

So I install MaOs on 1TB SSD external.

Restore from time machine, delete onedrive, delete Onedrive folder inside Library folder.

Then boot too internal storage, use migrate assistant, and select external SSD. And now can restore all.

This problem because onedrive put folder inside ~/Library and time machine count hardlink as real file.

Next i must force onedrive folder to user folder again

I had a similar problem with a 500 GB hard drive being cloned to a 1TB drive. Not enough room.

My issue was with Mail. It had grown to more than the 500 GB of the drive, i.e. with hard links, which, when cloned to the 1TB drive were duplicated and overran the drive. This all came about from rebuilding the mailboxes frequently to clear out a number of unread emails problem.

Check the V9 folder in the Home/Library/Mail folder and see what size it is.

If it's larger than it should be, mine is now down to an expected 3.23 GB as I save all of my emails on my hard drive.

If yours is unreasonable high post back and we can go from there.

i use carbon copy cloner, don't know will success or not

it say have 966GB

copied 350GB (for now)

But in storage using Get Info it only 94GB

The problem is on Time Machine or Migrate Assistant it still count all size, so if the storage below counted, it will not restore, no solution for force restore

Hope CCC success to clone
