After updating to 15.4, I cannot read messages without unlocking my phone. Any suggestions?

Are you referring to the ability to view and read received messages while the screen is locked? If YES, then double check the following setting:

Open Settings ➡️ Notifications ➡️ Messages ➡️ Lock Screen Appearance ➡️ Show Previews: Set this to Always.
