iphone not giving verbal map directions in carplay

My iphone 2022 se stopped giving verbal directions in carplay on either apple maps or google maps. What is weird about this is that if I am listening to the radio, itunes or podcasts, when a direction is being given, the volume of what I am listening to does drop. Needless to say I have done all of the normal items, increased volume while it is "speaking", checked every setting etc. This showed up in either 15.4 or 15.4.1. While not in car play, sound is normal on the phone. I checked the car, it is up to date and my wife's iphone x also at 15.4.1 has no issues.
