How to listen to Hi-Res Apple Music using an iPhone.

Ok, I have an iPhone 8 running the latest iOS, I have a subscription to Apple Music, and I have just bought a Bluesound Node wireless streaming device with a built in DAC. I am using Airplay to stream my music from my iPhone to my Node and really enjoying the experience. However, I recently found out that Airplay does not stream Hi-Res music to my Node, only AAC 256 kbps quality. The Apple website says that for me to enjoy Hi-Res Apple music I must use my iPhone with a wired connection and an external DAC to achieve the highest quality. My question is, can I do this with my iPhone and Node, and what type of wired connector would I use? I tried plugging in my charging cable (lighting on one end, USB on the other) into my iPhone and the USB plug in my Node, but nothing happened.

Thank you in advance for helping an old guy find his way through the maze of today's music streaming.

Hi RangerOne,

Here is a possibility.

  • Connect A to your iPhone.
  • Connect the usb-3 output from A to B.
  • Connect the usb-c output from A to a charger.
  • Connect the optical toslink output from B to the optical input (3.5mm jack) on your blue sound node, using the C cable.

But of course, I have not tested this setup myself so can’t warranty it will work.

And of course don’t forget to configure your phone (in settings) to download the hires versions of your music.
