Not enough disk space for Monterey 12.2.1

I got a new MacBook Air in January and am unable to upgrade to Monterey 12.2.1.. I receive an error message indicating there's not enough disk space. How is that possible and what do I need to do?

thank you!

How much disk space do you have and how much is unused?

From: How to upgrade to macOS Monterey - Apple Support

"If upgrading from macOS Sierra or later, your Mac

needs 26GB of available storage to upgrade. If upgrading from an earlier

release, your Mac needs up to 44GB of available storage."
