Migration Assistance slow

I screwed up my system and wanted to do a full restore from TM. When I tried that I got a message that I can only restore the OS and I must use Migration Assistant for everything else. Actually I don't know why I have to do this. I have always been able to boot into the restore terminal, cmd-R, and perform a full system restore. Maybe because I have upgraded to Monterey? Well anyway, I started Migration Assistant and after 15 minutes it reported 500 items have been processed. I'm assuming by items it means files. If that is the case my system with 50k items could take forever to restore. Is there a better way to do this?

thanks

john

What type of disk and connection are you migrating from?

A slow disk and slow connection results in a slow migrations.

Also, sometimes the migration during initial setup of the newly installed macOS will just stop. In that cate just cancel and try migration and the initial setup has been completed.

I migrated Monterey to my new Mac Studio from the NVMe startup drive connected via USB-C removed from my 2013 Mac Pro. It stopped after 17 minutes. I let it sit for 10 minutes and nothing else was migrated. I cancelled and completed setup and then migrated again. This time I was successful and it complete 300GB in about 27 minutes.

Then as a test I installed Monterey on an external SATA III SSD in a Thunderbolt 2 enclosure connected to the Studio via Thunderbolt 3/4>2 adapter.. During initial setup after booting form the external SSD migration stopped after 25 minutes or so used the Studio's startup disk as the source. I completed setup and migrated from the ™ backup on an extern SATA II SSD and it completed in about 50 minutes or so.
