AOL e-mail issue

My AOL account stopped working with MacMail after several years. Would deleting my account and adding it back cause me to lose all my archived e-mails?

In Apple Mail, click on Mail -> Preferences ( or press CMD+Comma) and go to the Accounts tab and highlight the AOL account then uncheck the box "Enable this account". Then add a new AOL entry with the + button and see if that works. If that doesn't work. Remove the new AOL account and go to your AOL account at https://aol.com and look at your security settings. You may need to allow less secure applications to access AOL and or/or turn on multi-factor-authentication (2-Factor) and then create an application password for specifically using Apple Mail.

You should not lose your AOL email as it's typically on the server. However to be safe, you can disable the AOL account in Apple Mail then add the same account again and if all is good then you delete the non-working AOL account once you confirm you are not missing anything.

If you are missing something then I would disable the new AOL account and enable the non-working AOL account and drag all the email you are missing over to On My Mac then toggle the two AOL accounts back and copy the email back to the new working AOL account. Once satisfied you can remove the old broken AOL account.

If the new AOL accounts your email should already be there but if you do need to migrate email you could flip-flop the new AOL to disabled and the old AOL to enabled and then move stuff to the On My Mac offline mailbox. Then flip the mailboxes back to enable the new one and disable the old one and drag and drop the email from On My Mac back to the new AOL mailbox.

Thanks!

I tried setting up the one-time password on AOL for Mail some time back with no luck.

The new-AOL-account approach sounds promising, but I notice that when I disable an account in Mail, it no longer shows up in the list of mailboxes…which makes transferring mail between a disabled account and an enabled account—or between two disabled accounts—problematic. But maybe I can figure out a way to do that, in case it becomes desirable.
