Any way to salvage the data of an iPhone 3GS who's battery is swollen?

My iPhone 3GS that I bought about three or so years ago finally stopped working. I had been keeping it in my backpack for a while, only using it every now and again, usually just for downloaded music; sometimes pictures. I took it out today to find that the screen was being pushed out of its place by something. Initially I assumed it was because I had been keeping it in my backpack for so long, and that the things I put in there jostled around enough with the phone to break the screen. The screen continued popping out, though, and eventually the battery expanded to a point where it tore off and bent the backside of the phone upwards, exposing the insides and the inflated battery. I'm currently keeping it in a safe place, in the off chance that it does explode. However, I'm wondering if there's any way to get rid of the battery in order to salvage the data on the device, or if it even can be salvaged. I understand it depends on how badly the device was damaged, but if anybody has any suggestions, I would love to hear them. Thanks!

Take it to a competent 3rd party repair shop and they should be able to clean up the damage from the swollen battery (besides pushing on things causing damage they also overheat and leak) and install a battery in it which will allow you to get the data from it. After that recycle that phone responsibly or use it as an iPod.

Apple considers that iPhone 3GS as "obsolete," as far as, support for it. That means Apple will not replace the battery or even have parts for this old iPhone ... so, to answer your question, I don't think it would be worth it even if you could.

This iPhone model maxed out with iOS 6.1.6. No current apps would run on it. It can only connect to 802.11b/g Wi-Fi networks and limited to GSM/EDGE cellular ones. I wouldn't count on this iPhone for daily use.

Thanks for the response. I had added my iCloud account to the phone back when I first got it, but either iCloud refused to backup because the phone was too obsolete, or I didn't set it up properly to make it work.

Also, when a battery does swell up in an iPhone, does it do something to the storage to make it unusable/unreachable? I'm curious because I'm unsure how a battery expanding would destroy other parts of the device (besides breaking the device open because of the swelling). Unless there was enough pressure from the battery on other components to crush them? (I'm only saying this because I made the mistake of charging the phone as it was swelling, and it surprisingly turned on and functioned for a couple minutes.) Secondly, would it be possible to have the battery replaced to recover data, or at this point is it even worth it? Thanks! Apologies for the confusing paragraph, I'm not exactly sure how to get my questions across cohesively.

(I'm not a hardware expert, mind you, these are just speculations.)
