iPad Pro 11” Magic Keyboard Shift Key Not Working

As stated in the topic, the shift key is not working on my Magic Keyboard folio case. It worked fine previously when new, regardless of language chosen, but discovered this problem recently. As a result, symbols, punctuation marks (shift key dependent) and others cannot be input.

Caps lock, auto-capitalization (on/off), shift key, other modifier keys used in combination do not work. However, the on-screen keyboard DOES work (used to capitalize and add symbols here).

As an initial step, removing the magic folio case - then force-restart your iPad before reuniting the case and iPad:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On other iPad models: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

Should the issue with a single key remain unresolved, you would be well advised to visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP), where both your iPad and Magic Keyboard can be assessed and tested for faults - and your options can be explored:

Genius Bar Reservation and Apple Support Options - Apple

If your keyboard requires repair or warranty exchange, you’ll be in the best place to resolve the issue.

@LotusPilot

Thank you very much for your comprehensive response. As instructed, I restarted my iPad separate from the folio case, then reattached the device. Problems with shift key and all associated characters have been solved!

I also tried setting the device language to Japanese (the Magic Keyboard folio is a Japanese model), and that worked even better. Strangely, keeping the iPad connected and switching the device language back to English (U.S.) does not recreate the original problems.

Keyboard input in English and Japanese were tested in Notes, Pages, Safari, Mail, Files and Evernote. No issues switching input language/keyboards.

Only one issue remains: The Caps Lock key now functions as a language switcher, similar to the globe mark key next to the arrow keys; however, the Caps Lock key only shows two fo the four keyboards, whereas the globe mark shows all four.)

I can live with the Caps Lock key not working - it might be a key mapping issue.

Appreciate your guidance and quick turnaround time.

Cheers!
