Studio display display with a PC - can you get webcam and mic/speakers to work??
Hi there,
I recently purchased a Studio display to go with my MacBook Air (M1). Setting up was a breeze, just plugged in and everything just connected with settings automatically sorted - as expected with Apple.
I then tried to connect the display to my work PC laptop, a rather ageing Lenovo Thinkpad with a core i7 Intel 7th gen processor. The PC does have a couple of usb-c sockets so I plugged the Studio display via the Studio thunderbolt socket into a usb-c socket on the PC using the thunderbolt cable that came with the Studio - and yes, the laptop screen came up on the Studio very nicely, and the Studio charged the PC. A welcome bonus as I realise you do not buy a Studio display specifically for a PC.
What I cannot get to work on the Studio display (when connected to the PC) is the webcam and mic/speakers.
I wouldn’t have expected any of the very Apple specific features like Centre Stage to work, but was hoping the webcam and mic/speakers would at least work at a basic level - but always realised that Mac and PC don’t necessarily get on that well, so was treating any compatibility as a bonus - as I said it does work with the PC as a basic (but excellent) monitor.
I (sort of) solved the situation by plugging an external usb webcam (with built in mic/speakers) into the PC, and can now happily do work video calls on Webex, Google Chat, Microsoft Teams etc, with the video working fine on the Studio display, and but the camera, mic and speakers via my external usb webcam.
What I wondered was whether anyone has managed to get the Studio webcam and mic/speakers to work with a PC - maybe on a newer PC, or have you had similar experience as me ??
Appreciate this is not a PC forum, but I’m sure a few of you have to dabble with PCs as well as Macs!!
Cheers
Justin
