Monterey - wired keyboard problems

I upgraded to Monterey 12.13.1 on 4/23/22. Since then I have had nothing but problems - slow computer, bluetooth problems, Mail problems, iMessage problems to name a few. It was suggested to me to boot into Safe Mode which I tried multiple times but it took me right back to my desktop. So I tried to reset my PRAM multiple times and that didn't work either. That is when I realized that the keyboard is not working properly. I can type and use my mouse ok.

I am using Apple's older keyboard, MB110LL/A. Since the bluetooth isn't working right I can't use a bluetooth keyboard.

What can I do to get into Safe Mode and reset my PRAM?

Thank you, Martha

My 2017 iMac has an intel chip, not a T2 chip.

When I tried to boot into Safe Mode by shutting down, turning the Power button on, and holding the shift keys, it didn't work, it booted back up to my desktop.

When I tried to reset the Pram (after disconnecting USB devices), then shutting down, turning it on, and holding the option, command, P and R buttons for 20 seconds, it didn't work and booted right back up to my desktop.

Before the Monterey update a few days ago, I could get into Safe Mode and Reset my Pram with no problem. Either the keyboard is not compatible with Monterey or this is another one of my many problems that came with Monterey.

I just don't know what to do.

Then, something was done incorrectly by the user or the Keyboard is not working

1 - Suggest restarting in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

In the above there are Two different methods, one of Intel Computer and one for Apple T2 Equipped Computers. Choose the one appropriate for this computer.

UPDATE: Thank you all so much for helping.

  1. I used a newer keyboard and got into safe mode. My problems remained the same in Safe Mode so I restarted my computer.

  2. In trying to reset my Pram, I turned my computer off, turned it on, held down "command-option-R-P" and it started up once (I was still holding those keys down) but it did do play that sound again, only once, not 3 times. So I have no idea if my PRAM was reset. Is one reset enough? When I used to reset the pram, as I held down those keys, it would keep resetting until I released the keys.
