Is there anyway to add to featured photos yet. Just deleted all the ones I had, didn't realize they would be deleted from my photo library. I want to see pictures of my family and pets, not all the other weird stuff I photographed.

The features photos are still behaving the same way as before. They are meant to be a surprise, and are picked automatically from the photos you have not looked at a for a long time. You can control the selection of photos for the featured photos and memories a bit, by using the "Show less ..." option in the memories or People albums, if a memory has been created that you are not interested in.
If you want to show your own selected favourite photos continually, use a third-party widget, for example:
