For the past six weeks my spreadsheets have not had any consistency in syncing to iCloud from my MBA 2021. Sometimes it works, but mainly it does not. Everything is enabled on the MBA for iCloud sync. No issues with Pages, Keynote or Photos. Numbers syncs just fine on my iPad and iPhone XR. I have complicated spreadsheets and working with them on my iPad is not a viable solution.
anyone else have this schizophrenic issue?

Yep, it's not uncommon.
Sign out of your Apple ID on all devices, then sign back in using the same Apple ID on all of them to reestablish synchronization.
I don't use Numbers any more preferring Excel. Too many decades experience with Excel I guess. My excel spreadsheets, some of which are very complex and large, all are perfectly synced on Macs, iPhones, and iPads. There is no reason Numbers shouldn't be so.

Thanks, but that's one of the first things I did.
Additionally I uninstalled Numbers, logged out of iCloud, rebooted, reinstalled Numbers ALL to no avail ...
