Hello PoppyB53.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
Per this article: Use Apple Pay for contactless payments on iPhone - Apple Support
"Pay with your default card on an iPhone with Touch ID
- Rest your finger on Touch ID.
- Position the top of iPhone within a few centimeters of the contactless reader until you see Done and a checkmark on the screen.
Pay with a different card instead of your default card
- When your default card appears, tap it, then choose another card.
- Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.
- Position the top of iPhone within a few centimeters of the contactless reader until you see Done and a checkmark on the screen."
To confirm, when trying to pay, are you holding it near the reader and it's not reading? If the pay point can't read the card, you may have the options to appear with the default card displaying at the top and a prompt saying "hold near reader".
If Apple Pay is not working properly, let's try restarting your iPhone first: Restart your iPhone. If you are using a case on your iPhone, try removing it then re-attempting another Apple Pay transaction.
Cheers!
