Not getting message notifications

i haven’t been getting message notifications. I thought it was a Focus or do not disturb problem so I disabled them. When I get a message, I see the contact name, a bit of the message and a bell with a slash on the right. When I checked all of my contacts, they are now all set to mute notifications? What happened and how can I fix it?
