It's really not obvious to me how you get the criteria to show up in the search bar in Console.app
For me it only ever shows it if you click on a saved search.
Also how are you suppose to search any system.log.[0-6].gz file?

Those log files typically prove to be useless to the user...
What is the bigger picture—what issue are you having?
Your .tar.gz implies a compressed file.... "GZip.archive"
If you generated a spin dump/sysdiagnose to pass along to Engineers you can find it from Finder, —
Findr>Go>Go to Folder> (copy & paste ) /private/var/tmp

The Console Application is more so Developers talking the Developers in a language only they would understand.
Not since Snow Leopard OS X 10.6 has Console really been a useful tool to general users like you and me IMHO.
