When I open the calendar on my iPhone 13, instead of going to today’s schedule it goes to events detail for an event occurring usually later than today. There does not seem to be any option in the menu for changing this. I have included two screenshots to show what I mean.

What do you have set as your default calendar? You can go to Settings > Calendar > Default Calendar to check.
Does it make a difference if you choose an alternate Calendar as your default Calendar?

On all my previous iPhones, 5,7 & XR, tapping the calendar app on the main screen would take me straight to todays schedule showing all events for the day. I now have the 13 Pro Plus, if there is an event scheduled for 'today', instead of showing the day and all events scheduled it opens to 'events detail' showing maybe the first scheduled event. I then have to tap out of that to get to todays schedule. I have tried re-booting, phone is on IOS 15.4.1, I have an iPad Air 8th Generation that is running the latest IOS and does not have this issue.

Just so we understand, do the events you're referring to have the same name?
Where specifically are you tapping in order to get details of the event?
If you haven't already, restart your iPhone and go through the actions again to see if the same thing happens: Restart your iPhone
