iTunes using a lot of cpu power.

I have been using iTunes on my Acer Aspire 5 laptop for almost two years. Recently the fan has been running high. When I checked processes in Task Manager I find iTunes is using up to 50% cpu power. Also I have had to constantly reboot to get iTunes to function properly. Movies and tv shows wouldn't play. I'd switch back to music and the songs wouldn't play. Have to reboot. I found that signing out would stop the power consumption but then tv shows wouldn't play. Signing back in and music won't play. Anybody have any idea what might be going on? I did a complete uninstall following the directions I found in support. Upgraded to the latest version. Didn't help.

Hey there WANemeth,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. We're happy to provide some assistance.

When you uninstalled iTunes, did you follow the steps outlined here?:

Remove and reinstall iTunes and related software components for Windows 7 and later

As mention in that article, it is important to follow those steps exactly:

"Don't uninstall these components in a different order, or only uninstall some of them. Doing so might have unintended effects. After you uninstall a component, you might be prompted to restart your computer. Wait to restart your computer until you're finished removing all of the components."

If you did perform those steps, we recommend making sure your PC is updated and see if this occurs in another user account to help isolate this issue. If you do not have another user account, create a test user account. For assistance with this, we recommend contacting Microsoft.

Keep us posted.

Have a great day!

Hola and thank you for getting back to me. As stated I did uninstall iTunes as per the instructions in the link you mentioned. I will try using another account and get back to you if the problem recurs. Sometimes it doesn't happen for days or weeks. Then there goes the fan running on high because iTunes is using so much power. Since signing out seems to stop it it appears iTunes is trying to do something with the store. I have it set to not automatically update anything so I can't imagine what it's up to.

Thanks,

William A. Nemeth
