I am using a new M8 monitor with my M1 mac mini. I can. not control the volume (I am using the M8s internal speakers) or the brightness using my magic keyboard. Anybody else having a similar problem either the M8 or another monitor?

Had the same issue with Samsung M8 and Magic Keyboard sound keys and https://staticz.com/soundcontrol/ trial version app worked for me. Didn't need the full version.

On the Samsung remote, click the left hand bar + sign, then push up or down on the same bar like a toggle. Volume will go up or down. So easy a 5 year old could do it! Yeah, right, after an hour of searching I noticed it toggled as well as pushed like a button. Thanks Samsung for telling us or making it obvious.

Did some googling, and found this solution. Appears to work for brightness, testing volume but that seems tricker.

It was free, required no setup, and appears to solve the issue.
The + bar (on the left on the Samsung remote) is a button AND a toggle! Push it then toggle up and down. That’s it!
In preferences, display is it set to Samsung and in the sound panel, output is it set to the monitor speakers?
For the brightness try to hold down the control key when you use the brightness keys and see if that works. I have a keyboard that requires that step.

Seems like it's either your Samsung display's hardware or software problem, or your Mac Mini's software problem.
Firstly, turn off and turn on. See if that works.
Second, directly attach a wired keyboard to your display. If it connects to your Mac, then try to adjust the brightness.
Third, the brightness itself may not be mandatory. You may have to manually adjust brightness in the display's software. You might notice a few buttons on the back, side, or bottom of the screen, and there is commonly where you can adjust the speaker's sound, display brightness, or contrast.

Yes, Display is set to Samsung, in the “Sound” panel Output is set to Samsung and Input is “Slim Camera”. So all of that works. You just can’t control sound and brightness with the keyboard.
I’m guessing b/c this is a “Smart Monitor” they’ve overcomplicated the monitor tot accommodate Netflix and Hulu viewing while losing a basic feature. Just not sure since this is the first time I’ve had this type of issue with an external monitor.
Unfortunately I don't think it's a "Settings" issue but rather how the monitor is designed. It's a "feature not a bug"

And you are correct, you can adjust the brightness and volume on the Samsung through the Samsung monitor OS (use the remote, go into the monitor’s menu, etc…). I’d like to be able to adjust brightness and volume using the Mac attached to the monitor (like every other monitor I’ve ever used!). Might not be possible with this model but before I returned it I wanted to see if I was missing something (a toggle within the monitor menu for example).
Thank you for the Github reference... unfortunately not sure i'm comfortable downloading a 3rd party "solution" onto a mission critical (for me) machine. Curious where you able to get the volume working?
So the Samsung M8 is a great monitor, but integration with MacBook Pro has issues around brightness and volume. So eqmac is free? everywhere I look I have to pay. Before I pay, does it solve the volume and brightness issue whereby I can control these via my apple keyboard which is connected to my Mac?
It would be good to have a brightness control on the remote as the apple external keyboard doesn’t adjust the brightness on the Samsung M8 monitor and there is no auto sensing on the monitor to adjust brightness in dark and sunny situations. Thanks Samsung for a dysfunctional product
How do fonts look to you ? I'm using the M8 connected to a 2017 27" iMac (mirroring for now) and I'm not impressed with font readability. I labeled the port I'm using on the M8 as "PC' which is supposed to use chroma 4:4:4 (best for text). Maybe it's a Mac scaling issue on 4K monitors ?
