MacOS 12.3.1 Upgrade - External drive no longer mounting

After upgrading to Monterey 12.3.1 my external drive is not mounting and is no longer accessible. I was also using that drive as a Time Machine backup. I also tried to upgrade (same day) Photo Mechanic, a 3rd party photo program which I've used and successfully upgraded for years, and the Safari download worked properly but the .dmg file didn't mount in order to complete the software upgrade.

Two drive mount issues on the same day, immediately after 12.3.1 upgrade.

Please advise.

Is the drive connected directly to the Mac?

That is not through a hub.

What is the make & model of your external drive that is not mounting? What is it formatted as: HFS+ or APFS? Do you use it solely for Time Machine backups? Does the drive appear in the Disk Utility?
