Can the USB Hub in the 27" Studio Display be used for HDD/SDDs?

When my external HDD (USB 3.1, Gen 1) is plugged into the hub in the back of my 27" Studio Display I get a notification when waking from sleep that it was ejected improperly. I don't have this problem when this ext. HDD is connected to a stand-alone (powered) hub or the back of my Mac Studio.

Is this normal or, if not, is there a setting I need to make, or do I have a hardware issue here?

Your HDD may be needing more current than the USB port can provide. That is why a powered hub works better. You cannot change any setting that will up the current available at the port on the display. I have found certain SSD's in different enclosures can be powered by the display port and others cannot.
