old text messages on my iphone

I have my text messages set to keep forever but i have found that I only have text messages from only 3 years ago, It appears any texts I have (had) before that are gone

Storage availability is not an issue, i've had this phone almost 2 years but have had everything and backed up icloud for messages is turned on, but don't know what else to do

How can I retrieve old text messages I’ve updated to iOS 12.3.1 and now all my old text messages are gone. I am sure I haven’t deleted them and I’ve always set the keeping of old text to ‘forever’. I don’t backup to ICloud. As important information has been is there any way I can get old texts back?

Lost text messages since changing to I phone 12 it has got rid of all my text messages more than a year old. I have kept so many messages from loved ones no longer here. I have ticked keep messages forever. how can I recover then. I assumed that if you transfer from old I phone to new that it would keep messages. also any idea how to find deleted texts. I don’t have I cloud backup thanks

You likely erased the messages at some point. Maybe on a different device that synced your messages.
