External display takes AGES to connect...

Hi, I own a base-spec M1 MacBook Air (2020), and I have recently purchased a HDMI adapter to connect the device to my personal monitor (AOC 24G2U/BK) and every time I connect the MacBook with the display it takes around 0-5 minutes for the display to start showing a picture, all the while the built-in display is working fine, however I can't use the MacBook for this period of time as I lose the cursor frequently and I have the external display set as the main display, which means whenever I attempt to open an application it opens on the display that I cant see yet. Although it does eventually work, it is quite frustrating when I just want to sit down and get on with my work and I even have to wait to use an application. I would appreciate if someone could give me an explanation as to why this is happening or a fix for the problem. Many thanks, Gianni

Hi giannipol31,

The article here can help you check the adapter you're using is recommended for the connection type. Adapters for the Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3, or USB-C port on your Mac

"If you're using a Mac with the M1 chip:

  • On iMac, Mac mini, MacBook Air, and 13-inch MacBook Pro, you can connect one external display using either of the Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports. On iMac, connect your display to either of the ports with the Thunderbolt symbol ."

You can view this information and helpful details here: Connect a display to your Mac

The article here also has suggestions and recommendations to check your display settings and resolution: If your external display isn't detected or appears blurry when connected to your Mac

Best!
