Group text sent via MMS when both recipients are on iMessage

I’m sending a text to two recipients. When I text them individually, I get blue chat bubbles. They’re both on iMessage. But when I send a group text via my iOS Messages app to the two of them, it’s sent via MMS (green bubble). Any reason why this would happen?

After working with a very helpful and patience Apple Support representative, we were able to resolve the issue.

The fix: I deleted the message thread on my phone, and started a new one. It worked perfectly.

One thing to watch out for: I went to my MacBook and responded in the thread, and it reverted (on my MacBook) to SMS/MMS. So I'd recommend deleting the thread on all devices, if possible.

Thank you for the response, Eric_G1. I did read the article you linked. It states:

If you and your recipients are using Apple devices and iMessage is turned on, then the group message is sent as an iMessage.

This is why I'm confused. All of us are on Apple devices and we all have iMessage turned on. When I send individual messages to them via the Message app, it sends as an iMessage. But if I add the second person to the recipient list, it switches over to a green MMS/SMS message. You can even see it pause for a second (see the video here: https://youtube.com/shorts/P9yqIzthfHs?feature=share) before switching over.

That's a great point, Oldbie.

One other consideration is that green SMS messages use your cellular carrier's towers to send messages, but blue iMessages require both an Apple device and a data connection. If you're trying to send an iMessage and the recipient is in a low coverage area, isn't connected to cellular data or Wi-Fi, or has them turned off for some reason, the message will be attempted by SMS instead.

Can you confirm none of this situations applies?

Hope that helps!
