My phone appears to recognise my face but it then immediately asks for my security code. I can't get access to my phone just be face recognition alone.

Are you sure you see that the lock has been opened when you try to unlock your phone using Face ID?
I want you to go to Settings > Face ID & passcode > Make sure the first option is to unlock iPhone that it is turned on, and try to unlock your phone again!
