MM 2018 on Mont 12.3.x. Samsung 970 EVO Plus NVME SSD not getting full speeds via external TB3 case. Getting 1/2 total write speeds (~1300 MB/s) only; write speed limitation due to SSD / macOS incompatibilities?

Mac Mini 2018 on Mont 12.3.x. I have a 1 TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus NVME SSD in an external TB3 case, and not getting the promised write speeds of ~2500 MB/s, only about half (~1200).

I called Samsung Memory Services that's been a well documented for MacOS and that specific SSD model. The guy on the phone basically acknowledged it COULD the problem but because I didn't have an internal machine to test it with and only external enclosures, he couldn't rule out my external case/computer being the issue (despite me explaining to him that I tested multiple connections and different cases, and this is a known documented issue). He sent me a SSD RMA to fill out and include all the information I've gathered and forum links to support my claim.

Apparently the 970 Evo Plus model has had issues from the start of it's release related to macOS, originally being completely unusable with the OS until Samsung put out a firmware update. However it's now been confirmed from multiple sources/places including the MacRumors forums, other sites, and even now on product pages for TB3 cases that this specific model has limited write speeds because of this.

I bought mine in Nov '20 (Phoenix controller) and none of this was posted as a notation or incompatibility on the Samsung Amazon page for it, and would have never chosen that model if I'd known.

I don't know what to do now. Can anyone confirm this is true that has the same SSD model with a Mac externally? I feel like if anything I'll get RMA'd back a refurbed model with the exact same issues. Unfortunately I don't have another machine with and NVME slot or even a TB3 port to compare it to.

Mac mini, macOS 12.3

I completely get that all drives don't get their max advertised perfect speeds. Especially with an NVME USB case that is correct, it definitely limits the write/read speeds, however Thunderbolt 3 at least can easily get you over ~2500 MB/s has been shown by countless other people and tests.

I was able to get a 980 Pro to test with using the exact same computer, ports, case(s), and setup, and lo and behold in the same two cases with the 980, my write speeds were ~2500 instead of ~1200. It proves it.

I don't really have an answer, but I suspect you've already found it.

You will very likely never get published speeds as they are max possible and not max to actually be delivered. If you were to duplicate Samsung's laboratory conditions, you might, but that's highly unlikely. For my Samsung external portable SSDs (T7) I get very close to published speeds depending on the port ... USB-A or the USB-C types. USB-A is consistently only 50% of the USB-C connection for the exact same T7.

My experience is an internal drive mounted in a USB enclosure is just not going to be as fast as those designed to be external. But as is the usual case, YMMV.
