My Mac mini M1 is not detecting my Samsung M8 Smart Monitor camera

Hello everyone, I'm using my Mac mini M1 with the Samsung M8 Smart Monitor, everything is working fine except the camera. I cannot do FaceTime or anything regarding to Samsung M8 camera. It said camera is unavailable. Does anyone know how to detect the M8 camera on Mac mini M1? Thanks

I struggled with the M1 Mini + Samsung M8 for a while (probably because I never read the manual, nor am I techie enough to wing it). Here's what I found:

  • Connect M8 to the Mini using the Samsung provided HDMI cable works right out of the box. However, the camera does not work.
  • Removed the HDMI cable. Connect the USB-C to C cable instead. Nothing seems to be working. However, I realized that in the M8 setting, go to External Device Manager -> USB source setup -> change it to USB-C. This seems to allow the Mini to detect the M8 and the camera can be used.

It does working when i use the remote control to back to Home and choose Slimfit camera. I can even use Google Duo, a default app to make video call. So it does working when on TV mode but when i connect with the Mac mini, the camera is unavailable. I contact the samsung team and they say it should be problem from The Mac mini. 🥺

Hi, I have read all your comments on here but cannot get mine to work.

I am also using a MacBookPro and the Samsung M8.

First of all, the microphone isn’t working so when I choose input settings, I cannot select the M8 or the camera.

The camera is working when I use it via the M8 system but not when the Mac book is connected.

I connected the two with the USB-C cable.

Accessibility options won’t allow me to click on the HeadPointer (greyed out) so I cannot choose the camera there either.

Hi @hmtran145!

I took off the HDMI connection and connected only the USB-C cable from the upstream port to the Mac mini but noticed an extreme amount of lag. The video quality, besides the fact that the camera isn't the greatest, is choppy at best and that's not even during a video call but just simply testing the connectivity through USB-C.

Did you experience the same thing?

Thank you,

Jason
