Say what.. you mean like the yellow pill button(?) to minimize. Never use this feature it seems a total waste.
Try simply Command H to hide, the HUD (heads up display) Comand Tab you can use the mouse or tab your way across to select, this shows all open applications.
Full screen mode is convenient using mission control

You can just click the yellow button instead.
