Hello, I need to make space on my iphone and ipad. If I connect them to my mac, can I delete photos from them and still have the photos on the mac or do I need to upload the pics to icloud?

iMac, OS X 10.11

Yes, as long as you do not sync your iPhone and Mac with iCloud, you can delete the photos from your iPhone after downloading them to your Mac and saving them there.

But check the photos carefully after downloading them, if they have been transferred correctly, before you delete them from your iPhone. occasionally a photo might be damaged by transmission errors, that are only visible when viewing the photo enlarged. I would wait with deleting the photos from the iPhone, until you have made the first backup of the saved photos.

Perhaps.

iCloud+ Plans Getting In the Way: As long as there is enough space, then all should upload just fine. Note that you have 5GB of free iCloud storage (given your location). Note that a hgh-resolution photo might be 4MB. So, 1,000 of those is about 4GB. So, if there are literal thousands, then you'd have to upgrade your iCloud+ Plan.
