The only way to stop the syncing is to go to System Preferences/iCloud (Apple ID for Catalina or later) and turn off syncing. When you turn syncing back on, it starts from the beginning.

Seriously Apple? how did you manage such a monumental design flaw? My Mac Book Pro is basically an expensive paperweight if the wifi is too fast. The hard drive fills up and I can't use any design software!
