Email "Invalid Credentials"

I just started getting these error messages on my Apple email app which connects through AOL. Only recent change was an upgrade to Monterey 12.3.1.

"The message “Best iPad Air deals for May 2022” could not be moved to the mailbox “AOL”

"Mail was unable to open this mailbox on the server “imap.aol.com”. The server returned the error: SELECT Invalid credentials"

Any suggestions?

Posting this again because it worked for me. Using Mac Mail/AOL. I'm no longer having issues, at least for the last 2 weeks. "My issue always happened when I was deleting emails. I changed the mailbox designated for trash under the tab "mailbox behaviors" from "trash" to "all trash" and it seemed to do the trick. For now at least!"

Hi FredS10. One other thing to consider here is setting the Drafts folder mapping within the same "Mailbox Behaviors" tab to be a local Drafts folder instead of the default Drafts folder in the AOL IMAP connection. If you are getting this error while typing a new draft: the Mail app is likely trying to save that draft (this happens frequently in the background while composing a message) to the AOL IMAP connection. If negotiating the AOL IMAP folder structure and saving to it is causing the problem then trying to use its IMAP-based folders for as little as possible will likely help. I'm an Apple Consultant and one of our clients has been running into this problem since Monterey 12.3.1 like everyone else here. On Thursday July 7 we made this change to the Drafts folder setting and so far as I know the error prompt has not returned. I will update here if that turns out not to be the case.

Eventually this should be fixed by a software update, if not by a change from AOL...

My parents also use their verizon.net email still which is hosted by AOL as of a couple years ago, however they are on a PC and using Thunderbird where they aren't having this problem at all. That being the case I believe this is a problem specific to the comboination of macOS's Mail.app under Monterey 12.3.1 & 12.4 & syncing with an AOL account. Unfortuantely I can report back that after setting the Drafts folder to store locally rather than on the IMAP connection the issue seems to have returned. It is happening less frequently than it had been, so our next step is to potentially set the junk folder to local rather than IMAP-based for the AOL account.

I have tried everything listed by other people. I had a netscape account (also part of AOL) - deleted that and changed it to an AOL account, it worked for a day or so then not.

I changed my password - this did not work.

I close out the mail then restart it, sometimes this works for a bit but then goes right back to the invalid credentials bit.

I am tired of deleting lots of email only to have them return like I never read them. This is so infuriating!

There has to be a solution to this.......PLEASE!!!!!!

Thanks, Jarmaracmur, for reminding me of this approach. I had done this before, long ago, but it got changed. Does an OS upgrade reset "All Trash" to "Trash"?

Another problem was that, while typing an email, I would get an error message telling me that the email could not be moved to the AOL account -- something I clearly was not asking it to do.
