Suddenly, my machine is asking for a password for privateKey. Is there a file somewhere that can be deleted in order to eliminate this problem? If so, is it in Keychain; a system file; Preferences; in the email app. itself?

Can you post a screenshot of the window that is asking for the password for privateKey?
What is privateKey?
The password may be in your Keychain it depends upon how you first created the password.

No matter. I was able to locate the problem file in Keychain and deleted it.
