Trouble Pairing Iphone to Ford Sync

I have a 2012 Ford Escape with what I assume is the basic Sync system. I've had a SE, a 6, a 6s+ and a 6s. I have been unable to pair any of them with Sync. Have the time, Sync doesn't even show up on the phone. The wheel just spins. When it does finally show up, and I enter the pin, it says "pairing unsuccessful" took too long. Any suggestions? I've done a Google search, youtube search and here and can't seem to find answer to my specific problem.

If you can't connect a Bluetooth accessory to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

It's possible you'll need to contact either the car or stereo manufacturer to see if they can provide any insight. Before doing that though, be sure to check the automobile owner's manual for steps on updating the firmware for your stereo system. Being up-to-date may be the best solution.
