How do I change the color of the sidebar font in Monterrey?

How do I change the color of the sidebar font in Monterrey? I can't read the default grey font, and increasing the contrast causes other difficulties. I would like to revert to the Catalina look/feel if at all possible. Reducing transparency and changing icon/font sizes doesn't help. I really need to be able to change the sidebar font to black.

The Finder offers no color change feature of its Window sidebar text. Experiment with your Display Color profiles to see if a setting darkens the existing text in Light appearance mode since you don't want to adjust contrast. Otherwise, the Dark appearance mode provides white sidebar text on a black background and that may be more legible.

What side bar exactly? Monterrey has many different side bars in different places. Finder, TV app, Music app, Mail, App Store... and many others.

Hard to help if you don't specify the Side Bar you are referring to. However, in default settings, the side bar text is black not grey in most of those apps..

Please explain exactly what you are referring to, and if you have any custom settings in System Preferences->Accessibility->Display

Thanks - this helps. I've been using an external monitor, and, while the side bar text (Finder, Mail), is showing up as grey with little contrast on the external monitor, if I use my laptop's built-in retina display I can see that the side bar text is indeed black (or a very dark grey?). It's much more legible on the built-in retina display, although it would be better if the side bar font was adjustable to make it bolder / thicker / more black.

I've experimented with all of the accessibility settings, as well as the general settings. I prefer the Light appearance over Dark, but agree that Dark has much better contrast.

I'm currently experimenting with the different display color profiles on my external monitor, and am trending in the direction of something I can read more easily (although photos look awful now). I've upgraded operating systems so many times in the past and have never had this issue before.
