Apple Pay through Wallet app scam?

i opened Wallet to pay in a shop and this message came up, with the Apple logo, saying my account was suspended and I needed to re enter my card details. There was a link to a website, again with the logo. Dodgy. What is this about?

If it’s a scam this is the closest I’ve ever been to falling in.

I deleted my card, I don’t think I’m going to use Apple Pay ever again. anyone out there had the same experience?

Apple may sometimes restrict the Apple Cash account. But to my knowledge never suspends Apple Pay for any reason so that seems odd.

If you saw the Apple Cash is restricted message, then it's real. Nobody can just send random messages though the wallet App but Apple. See here of that is the message you saw: link-> If your Apple Cash account is restricted or locked - Apple Support

Otherwise you need to tell us exactly what you saw and how it was presented. Apple Pay is extremely safe, so it s hard to imagine a scam through the Wallet app. There's just no way for any 3rd party to access the app to send system messages like that.

That has nothing to do with Apple Pay. That's telling you that whatever that website is, Updateinfopay.com their hosting account, the account that holds that particular website is suspended. Nothing at all to do with your Apple Pay your account.

Not sure how you got there, but it's completely unrelated to Apple Pay. Not sure its even related to the info pay website Raicya linked to. If I try to open that website (updateinfopay - com), it gives me a "Deceptive Website" warning. Seems like you fell for a scam link but it has nothing to do with Apple Pay.

If you provided any credit card information or personal details contact your bank or credit card issuer immediately.

You didn't answer my question. If you opened your wallet app and then got this message it is doing exactly what it should. Or did it pop up when you double-clicked to use Wallet, selected a card and then used it. In either case it is performing exactly as it should to provide security. Are you saying you would rather not be alerted to issues?

I see...thanks. The question remains why should I get a message from them when I was about to pay in the shop. Strange. It has knocked my confidence in Wallet. Not using it again.

You have not told us what you did exactly to get that website. Apple Pay is not a website, so I'm unsure why you are in web browser for this. Where you attempting to make a purchase on a website that supported Apple Pay? If so, then it may have redirected to that website after the Apple Pay process completed. Again this has nothing to do with Apple Pay. You are blaming Apple Pay for an external event. What were you doing when you got this message exactly?

@deggie, this is not working as it should. It is not Apple Pay doing anything. This is an external website that has been suspended for some reason.

The real question is: how they got to that website that shows that message.

@Phil, as you noted he has not responded in a manner that we can tell how he go to this point, which I've asked about twice. I have had a message via Apple Pay when I selected a card to use and it had been terminated by the credit card company but as you say it was not in a web popup. Since we don't know how he got to that message how do you know what is happening? My response was just that it is a good thing if you get such a real notice with Wallet/ApplePay, not a failure.

Ok, thanks everybody for your replies. I’ve just alerted my bank and I seem to be safe.

Just to recap: I was in my usual coffee shop, using their WiFi. They presented me with their card reader, price on screen. I double clicked my iPhone home button, Wallet opens, I put my thumb on the button, complete random screen comes up (on Wallet, I hadn’t touched anything!): “your account has been suspended, blahblahblah (I think something along the lines of you need to reactivate it)”.

How did I end up in Safari? I can’t remember the exact step. I’m quite certain it wasn’t a link, I think I put my finger on the screen and presto: a form that asks me for my name, address (I think phone number too).

I filled that in (I had no cash Or card on me and the coffee was made), thinking that’d sort out the problem. But another form appears, asking for my card numbers and security code! I stopped there.

PS. It’s my local family owned coffee shop, that said “ the coffee is on us, loyalty scheme, get one coffee free every one hundred, 😹“.

PSS. As I said, there is no clear link between Wallet and this people, and the last thing I expected was for the app to serve me up with this rigmarole. So I won’t be using it again. If you gays can think of any way of taking this up with Wallet that doesn’t waste me another hour of my life I’d be happy to find out more. In any case thanks for your tips.

The only thing I can think of is that something produced a url that was opened and led to this. But it was not Apple Pay or the Wallet App.

The Account suspended message is for the website, not your account.

The Apple Wallet App is not at fault here. Again, this was not caused by using Apple Wallet. This is a completely unrelated event.

The Apple Pay process does not in any way open a website when using the iPhone to pay through a terminal.

That's as much as I can say.

Bang! I have a theory as to what might’ve happened:

I’ve got the Notification Banners option ON for the Messages app. By a totally freaky coincidence I got this phishing text exactly at the same time I was ID thumbing this transaction. In my mind, the appearance of the banner was related to my trying to pay with Wallet, so I stopped to look at the text message with the link. It all happened very quickly, almost subliminally, and it confused the **** out of me.
