MIDI Controller Keeps Disconnecting on MacOS Monterey

Hi,

I've been trying to use my MIDI controller for the last few weeks now but it keeps disconnecting as soon as I plug the usb cable into the USB-C dongle I bought. This is what happens when I plug it in:

  1. The Audio MIDI setup and the App that came with the MIDI controller recognize that the device is connected.
  2. Less than a second later, I'm informed that the device is disconnected. However, the device itself reports that it's connected to a machine with the indicator light it has.
  3. Steps 1 and 2 continuously repeat until I give up and unplug the device.

I have tried most suggestions online but I am still unable to use my MIDI device on my Mac. I don't think the problem is with the USB-C dongle because I can still use my other devices with it including a mouse, a keyboard, and a phone to transfer data. I have some reason to suspect the new update because I don't remember having this problem prior to 12.3.1.

Drake04,

Thank you for the updated information.

Do you have another USB-C dongle you could test with? We want to rule out any issues with the connection before we move on to other steps.

Try restarting your Mac in safe mode. Safe mode prevents your Mac from loading certain software as it starts up, including login items, system extensions not required by macOS, completes a basic check of your startup disk, and clears cache. Here's how to complete this:

Apple silicon
1. Shut down your Mac.
2. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window.
3. Select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key while clicking “Continue in Safe Mode.”
4. Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again.

This information is from How to use safe mode on your Mac.

Cheers.

Hey there, Drake04.

Set up MIDI devices using Audio MIDI Setup on Mac is a great place to start with issues involving MIDI devices and your Mac, as it contains quite a few details about the process as a whole. You also mentioned software that came with your MIDI device. Have you verified that this software is the most current version? If not, updating that software would be a good idea. You may also want to check with the manufacturer of your MIDI controller to ensure that it can run properly running macOS Monterey 12.3.1.

Take care.

Hello,

Unfortunately, the device doesn't stay connected long enough for me to use the Audio MIDI Setup app to configure the device.

I'm certain that the app that came with my MIDI controller is up to date. I'm not sure if it can work properly with macOS Monterey 12.3.1 but it did work perfectly before I updated my macOS version to the latest. the last version on my mac was the one prior to the latest macOS update so I'm not sure if the problem is with macOS as well. The device itself acts strange when my computer disconnects it constantly but I'm sure it's not a problem with the MIDI controller itself because it already works with my Windows PC.

Thanks.
