Apple Pencil 1 is not working with iPad 8th gen

Ok I know that there are similar threads to this already and I've read most of them (if not all of them).

I have an 8th gen iPad (Model MYL92RK/A) with OS version 15.4.1 and an Apple Pencil 1 (Model A1603) with firmware version 02.61.00.

When I first got the pencil it was working perfectly, after some iPadOS update (I think it was 14.X) it's working for a few seconds and then it stops registering any input to the iPad.

The pencil is:

  • Connected properly (listed under bluetooth device listing as connected)
  • It reports battery properly (it's battery life seems normal)
  • When I hold it in writing position it seems that palm rejection works
  • BUT it's not registering on the screen so I'm not able to write anything

I have already tried:

  • Un-pairing and re-pairing from the bluetooth settings
  • Using a different nib (the extra one provided in the original box)
  • Made sure nib is not too loose or too tight
  • iPad factory reset
  • Leaving it connected with the iPad in 100% charge so if there is any newer firmware update to be done

Any idea on how to fix is welcome.

As described, your iPad has been updated to the most recent version of iPadOS. Similarly, your first generation Pencil has been updated to its most recent firmware version. You’ve tried all the obvious troubleshooting steps.

If you are able, perhaps find another iPad with which you can test the Pencil. This will either confirm a potential issue with the Pencil, or demonstrate that the Pencil is healthy.

Beyond this I have but one suggestion, this being a Factory Restore - but only after you have ensured that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup of your iPad.

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

When you are certain that you have a current backup, your next step is to perform thenFactory Restore - which will fully reset the iPad and install a fresh copy of iPadOS - then follow the normal iPad setup procedure. As you complete the process, you will be offered the opportunity to restore your data from your backup; initially, you should not restore from your backup, but instead set-up “as new” using your AppleID:

After completing initial setup, pair your Pencil and test for expected function. If unresolved, either your iPad or Pencil is likely to have a hardware fault requiring diagnosis by Apple. Otherwise, If all is well, restore your backup - and re-test.

Hopefully your problem will have been resolved - but If the problem returns after restoring your backup, then a problem exists with corrupt settings data.

If you need to escalate to Apple, you can contact the Support Team using the Get Support link at top-right of this page. Alternatively, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:
