Old backups are automatically filling recycle bin

Dear users,

The recycle bin of my new macbook pro is being filled with old backups (2016-2020). The macbook pro, as well as other home computers, are connected to an AirPort timemachine. I assume this is somehow related to the backup device emptying space, but why are these files ending up in my recycle bin? Is there a way to stop these old backups from appearing on my macbook? They take a long time to erase.
