How do I backup Messages on iCloud?

I have Messages set in Preferences to "Enable in iCloud" to sync Messages with my iPhone, Mac and MacBook. But when I log in to my iCloud account and open iDrive and the Messages & Other folder it is empty. How do I backup Messages on iCloud and where are they stored there?

Messages are not backed up in iCloud; iCloud only serves to synchronize messages across devices. In other words, if you delete a message, there is no copy retained in the cloud. You cannot view messages online as they are end-to-end encrypted.
