Muffled sound when recording with camera app and zooming in

Hello! I have the iPhone 12 mini and issues with recording videos. I went to a concert and every time I zoomed in the sound of the video changed. But as soon as I zoomed back out to x1 the sound was fine again. My phone is new so the microphone is clean. There is also no issue with my speaker because recording videos with zooming in with other apps like snap chat works fine. Hope someone can help! :)

Hey Pyjamalover,

It sounds like you may have 'Record Stereo Sound' enabled in Settings > Camera. This feature affects zoom in the Camera app by reducing sounds from the rear and side of the device as you zoom in, while enhancing the sounds coming from the direction the camera is pointed in.

This feature is handy in many situations, but could produce unexpected results in a concert setting.

We hope this helps explain what you're experiencing.

Take care.

Hello Pyjamalover,

Ensuring audio is recording as expected when recording a video is important. To confirm, have you verified the microphones aren't covered? You can use the image in the "External Buttons and Connectors" section in the following article to verify where the microphones are located.

iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini - Technical Specifications - Apple

Since you've isolated the issue to the the Camera application and recording videos, you'll want to follow the steps listed below. You can also find these steps in the following article.

  1. "Force the app to close."
  2. "Restart your iPhone."
  3. "Update the software on your iPhone or iPad."

If an app on your iPhone or iPad stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won't open

Let us know how that goes!

Hi bbesspete,

I had this exact problem. Went to a concert and recorded a bunch of videos only to realize they came out muffled due to this setting.

Do you know if there is anyway to “fix” the audio? Like if there anything I can do to get rid of the muffled sound.

Also, whenever I turn that setting off and record a video the audio now sound super low. Why is that and can I do something to fix that?

Thank you so much for replying!

I checked the image with the locations of the microphones and they weren’t covered while recording. In my recordings the sound goes back to normal as soon as it’s completely zoomed out to x1. But as soon as I zoom in, the sound changes. And I didn’t covered the microphone in the process of zooming in and out.

I also tried the steps you mentioned but it didn’t work.

Thanks again!
