Format external disk

Hi, I have a doubt that I can't clarify, for which I appreciate help: My iMac has the High Sierra installed in Mac OS Extended format.

The external disk I use (WD My Book) for Backup and archive, with partition, can it be formed in APFS?.. .

Can it be problematic?...

how to reformat external HD from APFS to Mac OS Extended (Journaled)? I am trying to change format on a 2T Lacie portable HD from APFS to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). This is to use it as a backup HD for large Photos libraries pursuant to an instructive discussion on this forum. But when in Disk Utility, I click on the 2T HD, and then on Erase, I only get 4 options to format and all of them are APFS formats, which is how disk is already formatted. Don’t know if makes a difference, but the disk in partitioned, and contains backups and photos and other materials. I have saved all these elsewhere, expecting that reformatting will erase all of them. So, how to I reformat disk as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)? Thanks.

EXTERNAL DRIVE REFORMAT I have an external HD formatted in APFS. I need it formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) so I can use it to copy the files from a Catalina Time Machine that has gone bad. But Disk Utility doesn't let me choose any format but several APFS formats. How can I reformat it? Thank you. JK

APFS was semi-introduced in High Sierra but only of the computer had an Original Apple SSD Drive.

Otherwise Disk Utility on High Sierra with an HFS Journaled / GUID Computer will and can not even understand APFS let along Format an external drive is APFS
